Temporary Sr. Director, Global Development Initiatives – Foundation Partnerships

Reporting to the Vice President of Foundation Partnerships, the temporary Senior Director will supervise Global Development, directly overseeing the team’s portfolio of complex, multi-year grant programs with leading U. S. private foundations and institutional funding partners.

Special focus will be on the following associated areas of work:

  • Supervision of Global Development project flow, management of investments/special initiatives in the areas of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, Education, Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Child Protection, Data, Research and Policy, Gender, Institutional Strengthening and Polio.
  • Lead business development strategy to grow projects and relationships with priority partners and prospects with focus on leveraging existing partnerships and targeting new or lapsed commitments from leading U.S. based private foundations and institutional partners.
  • Supervision and delivery of team proposal development targets during peak summer and autumn season.

This temporary assignment is available mid-May through mid-November 2016 (*days flexible*).

Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to)**:**

The temporary Senior Director for Global Development Initiatives will cultivate, manage and grow complex, multi-year grant programs at the ≥$10 - $20M+ aggregate annual level with a significant portion of USF’s portfolio of leading U. S. institutional partners in the above programmatic work areas, as well as Special Initiatives TBD.

· Contribute to overall strategy for cultivating, managing and growing the current Foundation Partnerships portfolio.

o Lead the Global Development Initiatives workstream in identifying and developing new strategic and collaborative funding opportunities/initiatives with current and potential partners, under the programmatic work areas defined above.

o Formulate and implement individual plans and strategies for developing key partnerships and initiatives under the programmatic work areas defined above.

· Troubleshoot and field sensitive issues and inquiries with partners; escalate as appropriate.

· Forecast and develop revenue projections for the programmatic work areas defined above within Foundations’ annual budget (≥$10 - $20M+ aggregate annual level).

· Monitor revenue projections and OTPS portion of Foundation Partnerships’ annual budget for the programmatic work areas defined above and provide regular update on actuals to Vice President; identify and address any anticipated issues in meeting budget expectations.

· Liaise with UNICEF and other internal/external U. S. Fund stakeholders on key issues under the programmatic work areas defined above, including individual projects/initiatives. Additionally, serve as an internal resource to the team and the wider agency vis-à-vis global and sectoral developments within these work areas.

· Manage team of four (4) direct reports, including progress/results, workflows, and making recommendations to the Vice President re direct reports' performance/recognition, development of staff skills and capacity.

· Contribute to strengthening and further developing Foundation Partnerships team’s internal and external processes and mechanisms.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree in international development, international relations, global/public health, public policy/advocacy, economics or a related field strongly preferred.
  • At least 7 – 10 years’ experience in developing and managing complex strategic partnerships with U.S./international institutional funding partners (or equivalent private sector), with demonstrated track record of successfully achieving funding for/administering large-scale projects.
  • Previous experience in managing direct reports to successfully secure funding for/administer large-scale grant projects required and/or substantial experience in private foundation grants cultivation and management.
  • Ability to develop and implement a business plan for developing and managing complex partnerships with leading institutional funding partners, including goals, strategy, and tactics.
  • Proven ability to prioritize, work independently, handle multiple, complex tasks simultaneously, generate pragmatic solutions to address potential roadblocks as well as leverage key opportunities.
  • Ability to navigate complex environments, help build relationships with a variety of different institutions.

  • Strong “client service” orientation and interpersonal as well as negotiation skills, quantitative and analytical skills, and written/verbal communication skills.
