Director, Foundation Partnerships
Reporting to the Vice President (VP) of Foundations Partnerships, the Director will be responsible for proactively growing and securing new partnerships with leading U. S. private foundations and institutions. The Director will contribute to and implement UNICEF USA’s strategy to grow partnerships with leading U.S. Foundations, and will be responsible for achieving aggressive revenue targets as part of the Global Health work stream and overall Foundation Partnerships team’s annual goals.
Special focus will be on the following associated areas of work:
Develop, manage and expand grants/grant-based initiatives that will effectively leverage the Foundations team’s leading institutional funding partners in support of various cross-cutting areas of UNICEF’s work, based on UNICEF’s and the UNICEF USA’s common mission of saving and improving the lives of children worldwide
Identify external opportunities to leverage UNICEF brand and programmatic expertise
Under the VP’s leadership, grow projects and relationships that will allow the Foundation Partnerships team to flexibly pursue and diversify high-impact opportunities for increasing support to UNICEF across various areas of these institutions
Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to):
Grants Management
Take a leading role in negotiations of grant agreements and contracts emanating from business development opportunities in concert with grant managers.
Provide guidance and advice to grant managers on grant agreements, sub-awards and contracts for non-UNICEF implementing partners, scopes of work, budgets, and reporting forms.
Provide oversight and quality assurance to funding proposals and reports being submitted to external partners.
Participate in executing partner engagement opportunities per the programmatic work areas defined above, in coordination with the Foundation Partnerships Engagement Strategy.
Liaise with UNICEF and other internal/external UNICEF USA stakeholders on key issues under the programmatic work areas defined above, including individual projects/initiatives.
Serve as an internal resource to the team and the wider agency on global and sectorial developments within these work areas.
Team Management and Operations
Contribute to strengthening and further developing the Foundation Partnerships team’s internal and external “best practice” processes and mechanisms, including for grants management.
Mentor/train staff in Foundation Partnerships team on business development opportunities.
Be proactive to identify opportunities to meet annual revenue targets and mitigate challenges around attainment; communicate clearly with VP on unforeseen challenges that impact results.
Establish the appropriate staff structure and foster a culture that maximizes efficiency and effectiveness for Foundation Partnerships.
Manage, directly and indirectly, key relationships with UNICEF Program and UNICEF Private Sector Fundraising Partnerships as they pertain to Foundation Partnerships.
Leverage members of the Senior Management Team (SMT), National and Regional Boards in engagement, solicitation and stewardship of Foundation Partners.
Establish key performance indicators that indicate health for Foundation Partnerships. Monitor and report regularly to senior leadership and Board members as needed on the progress of partnership programs.
New Business Development
Lead components of and implement new business strategy to drive income growth.
Represent UNICEF USA at meetings and conferences to remain appraised of global development trends and issues and explore new opportunities for engagement.
Assist VP to devise and implement the Foundation Business Development Strategy to achieve revenue targets defined in the UNICEF USA strategic plan, by cultivating and building alliances with US-based Foundations and Institutions.
Identify and develop new strategic and collaborative funding opportunities/initiatives with current and potential partners.
Work with the VP to conduct industry analysis in order to identify priority foundations which are best fit for potential partnerships, and develop strategic plans for each, which could include philanthropic/foundation grants, sponsorship of UNICEF USA campaigns and where appropriate, may also include non-revenue activities in support of the partnership (such as thought leadership, seminars and other expertise sharing).
Formulate and implement individual plans and strategies for developing key partnerships and initiatives under the programmatic work areas defined above, coordinating necessary. internal and external resources to ensure all grant programs are effectively executed and partners’ needs are fully met.
Demonstrate and deploy strong knowledge of UNICEF’s global role as it relates to the programmatic work areas defined above, in writing and in person.
Collaborate with UNICEF USA departments on cross-organizational special projects, initiatives, and lead special projects, as appropriate.
Work closely with UNICEF colleagues, and work to ensure partnership terms are in compliance with UNICEF processes and guidelines.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree strongly preferred in international development, international relations, global/public health, public policy/advocacy, economics or a related field.
Minimum of 10 years’ work experience, with a focus in developing and managing complex partnerships with leading U.S./international institutional funding partners and in private foundation grants cultivation and management desired, and a demonstrated track record of successfully achieving funding for/administering large-scale project.
Knowledge of, and preferably direct experience with, grant-making rules, regulations and policies of U. S. private foundations as well as federal grant-making institutions; familiarity with current global health/development issues, UN agencies.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills, excellent communication, and entrepreneurial thinking. Must be able to formulate strategies and concepts and influence others. Ability to build relationships with diverse individuals, and direct experience engaging with senior-level decision makers and influential individuals in foundations / philanthropy community.
Significant business development and relationship building skills, and proven ability to meet revenue targets.
Direct experience in data and monitoring, technology for development a plus.
Demonstrated management experience desirable.
Some travel required, within the U.S. and internationally.
