Assistant Director, Public Relations, UNICEF Kid Power

UNICEF Kid Power (Kid Power) is a program of USF, and is made possible through the generous support of Presenting Sponsors Star Wars: Force for Change and Target, as well as local supporters, parents and fans. Kid Power aims to inspire a new generation of active and healthy global citizens, and consists of a tech-enabled school program for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms, and a retail product and App for families that is defining a new Wearable-for-Good® category.

Reporting to the Managing Director, UNICEF Ventures, the Assistant Director, Public Relations, will assume oversight and responsibility for the development, management and implementation of public relations activities and communication strategies that expand public awareness and support for Kid Power. Working in close collaboration with the USF Public Relations team, the Assistant Director will ensure strategic coordination of broader earned media strategy and help bolster UNICEF’s relevance in the U.S.

The Kid Power program is being developed as an internal startup, with ambitious goals for growth, clearly defined performance targets for team members, and an agile and iterative approach to execution. We are looking for a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who can thrive in a fast paced environment. The ideal candidate will be highly collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity, adaptable to change, and be able to work independently on a day to day basis.

Employment for this position is dependent upon the continued success of the Kid Power program.

Key Responsibilities/Outcomes (include but are not limited to):

  • Developing and executing public relations strategies to elevate the Kid Power brand, ensuring messaging is compelling, consistent, relevant and in line with the USF for UNICEF brand.

  • Collaborating with Kid Power product marketing and social media teams to build holistic, 360 marketing campaigns to maximize ROI and drive Kid Power business.

  • Collaborating with the Partnerships, sports and corporate teams to implement and support Kid Power partner communications, plans and activities, including but not limited to events and support of media outreach efforts, while also working to ensure activities and activations are in line with broader USF communications strategies and goals.

  • Drafting, routing and assuming oversight of approvals for all Kid Power media materials, including but not limited to, press releases, key message documents, media templates, fact sheets, Q&As, Op-Eds, interview briefs, conference and award submissions, partner blog posts, press materials, social media messaging, quotes from USF or Kid Power spokespeople, among others.

  • Overseeing media-related logistics, vendor coordination, planning and preparation for Kid Power events and activations, locally and across the country.

  • Leading and implementing external communication activities, including media appearances and events and providing interview prep and media guidance and best practices to Kid Power spokespeople, including kids, teachers and partner spokespeople.

  • Responding to reporter inquiries, vetting media and conference opportunities, maintaining day-to-day relations with U.S. media outlets in conjunction with USF PR team, mining UNICEF Kid Power for engaging stories and proactively pitching them to media outlets.

  • Monitoring for Kid Power media coverage, sharing with relevant internal and external stakeholders, creating coverage reports as needed or as requested by partners.

  • Serving as a day-to-day focal point for key internal and external stakeholders, including communications and marketing counterpoints at a portfolio of Kid Power corporate partners and sports leagues/teams.

  • Traveling domestically and internationally in support of Kid Power’s public relations efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of seven years of work experience in public relations, media relations, communications and/or journalism.

  • Superior written and oral communication skills.

  • Overview of national and regional media landscape in key national, tech, education and innovation outlets, with media contacts preferred.

  • Strong track record of achieving measurable results.

  • Experience with regional media and events preferred.

  • Experience with marketing products and services for children and youth preferred.

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to children’s issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment under multiple deadlines, with “grace under pressure.”

  • Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration, and demonstrated ability to build relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule that includes some weekend and evening commitments, as well as business related travel both nationally and internationally.
